A BOOLAROO bricklayer has been convicted of breaking home building laws after a former client alerted the Office of Fair Trading over the construction of a defective retaining wall at Mount Hutton.

Keith Orr was found guilty yesterday in Newcastle Local Court of undertaking and receiving payment for residential building work without a contract of insurance.

"This client had paid more than $27,000 for the construction of a block retaining wall [but] Mr Orr failed to complete the job and what he had built was riddled with defects," Fair Trading Minister Linda Burney said.

Mr Orr also failed to provide a written contract.
